The episode starts off in a flashback at a diner with a young and attractive woman serving customers. Liu Kang is working at the diner as a dishwasher. The woman is actually Liu Kang’s fiancée. Liu Kang is working up the courage to tell his boss that he is going to marry his daughter. Suddenly the diner is being robbed and Liu Kang’s fiancée is held at gunpoint. The screen goes black and a gunshot is heard. In the present at a restaurant Kung Lao is preparing for the Mortal Kombat tournament with fellow shaolin monks. Kung Lao heads to a portal that will take him to the island with the tournament is being held. At the island the Earthrealm warriors arrive, Lieutenant Kurtis Stryker, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, Kenshi, Kung Lao, and Lord Raiden. At the same time the Outworld forces gather with Kitana, Mileena, and Scorpion, Liu Kang, and are led by the sorcerer Shang Tsung. It has begun.

This episode reveals Liu Kang’s fall. You spend all of your life training to physical and mental perfection for a tournament in order to protect humanity, but humanity pays you back by killing all that you hold dear. That’s a tough pill to swallow. It’s hard not to feel for Liu Kang in this series. The rest of the episode introduces the rest of the kombatants at the island. The island reminds me of the Wastelands from Mortal Kombat (2011) and the early island setting from the first film. It was interesting to see Liu Kang appear with the forces of Outworld. Two sworn enemies stare down as Shang Tsung echoes back to the first film. While Shang Tsung and Liu Kang have one of the biggest feuds in the series, it seems they have more in common than meets the eye.
