Character #5

Sitting pretty in 5th position, we have the Edenian Princess, Kitana. The 10,000 years old who was first introduced as Shao Kahn’s daughter. But soon she discovered the truth and vowed to do all in her power to overthrow Shao Kahn and restore Edenia. Her plans came together when Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung lured Earth’s heroes into Outworld. Kitana entered the tournament and secretly began to contact Earth’s heroes trying to help them defeat Kahn. However, Kitana’s efforts were discovered by her clone Mileena. Mileena attacked Kitana, forcing her to defend herself. She defeated and killed Mileena but this act revealed that she was no longer loyal to Shao Kahn.

When the Earthrealm warriors escaped from Outworld, Kitana sentenced to death for killing Mileena. However, after Sindel’s resurrection and Shao Kahn’s subsequent invasion of Earthrealm, she managed to escape and rejoin her newfound allies from Earth and gain their help in turning the resurrected Sindel. Kitana managed to convince Jade, who had been sent to kill her, to also turn against Kahn and join the forces of good, Jade then helped Kitana defeat Reptile. Eventually, Kitana pushed through to her mother and freed her from Kahn’s grasp. Kitana and Sindel freed then Edenia from Outworld and the realm had barely recovered when Shinnok and Quan Chi invaded Edenia and imprisoned them. Kitana broke loose, only to encounter a resurrected Mileena, now in the service of Shinnok. However, soon the forces of darkness were defeated by Raiden and his comrades, and Edenia was free once more. It is after these events that Kitana finally proposed to Liu Kang and offered to rule Edenia together as King and Queen. Which is strange considering Sindel is still alive, isn’t it? Liu Kang rejected her, saying his place was as Champion of Earth.

After Shinnok’s defeat, Kitana learned that Shao Kahn had survived his defeat on Earthrealm and was trying to regain his strength in Outworld. Kitana hastily formed an alliance with the Shokan in order to stop Kahn from rising again. The war came to a stalemate because of Goro’s death at the hands of Noob Saibot though Kitana learned that Shao Kahn had been slain by unknown assassins. She was on her way home when she encountered Kung Lao and he told her of the Deadly Alliance. Kung Lao told Kitana of the Deadly Alliance’s plans and how they had already managed to kill Shao Kahn and Liu Kang… maybe he should have gone with her. Despite being upset, she joined with her old Earthrealm allies against the new threat. She found herself facing Quan Chi one on one when the forces of light assaulted Shang Tsung palace. Kitana was outmatched by the powerful sorcerer and killed.

However, shortly after, they were resurrected by Onaga, who then put a powerful spell on them, turning them into his loyal servants, making Kitana imprison Sindel, knowing Sindel would not fight her own daughter. Thanks to Jade, Sindel escaped and Kitana then went back to Onaga, then she, as well as the four others under Onaga’s spell then fought Ermac and with the help of Liu Kings spirit, Kitana was released from Onaga’s control. At that time, while she made her way back to Edenia, she encountered Blaze, who told her of a coming new danger that will threaten all the realms and that she must gather her forces to face it. Weary of constant battle, Kitana felt disheartened, wondering if the fighting would ever end. However, Blaze assured her that the wars would soon be over. Following this warning, Kitana returns in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, fighting alongside Edenia.

Kitana will more then likely be in future games considering the importance she has played throughout the Mortal Kombat games, though in what role is another matter. It is just as easy to have her as an important NPC as well as being a playable character. Unless something drastic happens, I don’t see Kitana leaving us just yet.

The princess of Edenia comes in at a whopping number five. And it’s obvious why she’s the fifth most popular character in the Mortal Kombat universe… I mean did you see those two…. steel fans she carries around? I mean mah gawd… those can slice some peeps up. You don’t want to mess with this woman. But I pose one question… what the hell was Liu Kang thinking at the end of Mortal Kombat 4? Tell me you wouldn’t take her up on her offer.

Can I just say, that without Kitana’s Fan Wave, I don’t think I would have ever beaten Kintaro in MK2. What a great, great move. Her choice of weapon also gave her notoriety amongst other fighters. Why have swords and spears when you can use steel fans – sweet! I can’t help but think though that her taste in men has helped her survival in the series… That and she’s a hot princess. Her evolution from a slave to Shao Kahn and her family ties to Sindel and Edenia have meant she’s always stood out compared to the other ladies in MK. Her look hasn’t really changed that much over the years – her MKDA look was probably the most drastic departure from the traditional blue ninja garb. But this doesn’t stop her from having lots of Fans….. >_>

Dave’s Input

I’m a little surprised the 10,000 year old daughter of Sindel knocked Sonya Blade completely off this list. It’s gotta be that mysterious mask, those nifty fans and that sexy revealing outfit right? Whatever it may be to most of you MK fans out there, I have to say if there’s one female kombatant to make the top 5 other than Sonya, I think Kitana deserves it for the reasons above.
